Children’s Memorial Hospital to Relocate
Children’s Memorial Hospital, an institution in Lincoln Park since 1882, has announced its decision to move to a site adjacent to the new Prentice Women’s Hospital on East Chicago Avenue in the Streeterville neighborhood. The main hospital facility at Lincoln, Fullerton and Orchard (the triangle buildings) and many of the support facilities (including offices and the parking facility) will be affected by the move. The research facility located on Halsted just north of Fullerton and the outpatient facility located at 2515 N. Clark will remain at their current locations. The new hospital, estimated to cost $750 million, will open in 2012 and will further enhance one of Chicago’s premier medical campuses centered around Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The departure of Children’s and its significant land holdings means significant changes are coming. Property usage and density, open space and economic development are some of the issues that will need to be addressed. A community forum will be formed in 2007 involving the Alderman’s office, neighborhood associations, residents and other constituents. Individuals interested in becoming involved in this process are urged to stay in
touch with the Alderman’s office for details. Announcements will be made via email. To get on Alderman Daley’s email distribution list, go to www.chicago43rd.org or call 773-327-9111.
Children’s Memorial intends to remain involved in the Lincoln Park community even after its move is completed. Currently, the “Year of the Child” program is one way the hospital is partnering with its neighbors in Lincoln Park to promote children’s health and healthy lifestyles. Events are scheduled throughout 2007. For more information, go to www.Lincolnparkconnect.com or call the Community Relations Office at Children’s (773-880-4000).
